My sweet Little KK, better known as Katie, has a horrible flea allergy we've been battling for a couple of years. Some things I used helped, but the problem never completely went away and some products seemed to make it worse. The vet even told me to put Advantage on her twice a month and that didn't work and was very costly. The poor thing constantly had an oozing rash around her neck and shoulders and her legs, butt, and belly. Half of her body was hairless, even her tail. Every morning I was taking the flea comb to her. I started using Diatomaceous Earth (food grade), which is all natural. I found it at a store called Natural Pawz or you can order it on-line. You can sprinkle it on their food and dust their bodies with it and it's safe for tiny kittens. It's a very, very fine powder, so be careful to cover eyes and noses when applying. I just put a little on my fingers to apply to face and ears. I'm dusting Katie w/it 2 -3 times a month. I am SO PLEASED AND HAPPY FOR KATIE to report that Katie's rash is completely gone, she's not scratching near as much, and her hair is growing back. Oh, and also she's back to her old self, not angry all the time. It's also supposed to be good to use for worms and I'm told you can get a lower grade and dust your lawn with it to kill insects. What happens is, the fine dust gets in the exo-skeleton of the insect and acts as shards of glass and/or drys the insect up. I think the bag I bought was one pound and was $12.99. That bag should last quite a while b/c it doesn't take much, so it's very cost effective. I put some in a little shaker bottle and I'm dusting all my cats now. I highly recommend DE!!!

I am happy for you and most happy for Katie. That is wonderful, and thanks for sharing. Your cat-share friend JoAnn/Bradenton,FL
Permalink Reply by Sarah Lewis on June 13, 2012 at 10:53am Diatomaceous Earth is not harmful to cats? You mentioned that it can be sprinkled on their food but, you also mentioned that when dusting the cat to cover his eyes and nose? ... I'm curious, is it safe to be ingested? ... Milo's reaction to Revolution was a little different. He never received a rash, he would walk around in circles and stumble (like he was drunk). I don't know, I guess I'm just a little leary of putting anything on him right now. My vet wants me to try Advantage too but, I'm really scared he may have a reaction to that as well. I will get online and research a little more on DE. Thank you for sharing! :)
Permalink Reply by Cindy Kerns on June 13, 2012 at 10:55am You're most welcome. I love sharing tips and money saving info. DE can also be used on dogs. When I first got it and put some on her I wasn't sure it was working, but I gave it another try and it has worked wonders. And I love that you can use it on tiny kittens and other baby animals. If you try it let me know what you think. Backatcha from Houston, TX.
Permalink Reply by Cindy Kerns on June 13, 2012 at 11:52am By all means do some research.....I did. DE is such a very fine powder that the main reason I say to cover eyes and nose is b/c the first time I used it I breathed some in and it really dried my nose out for a little bit. I can only imagine how a kitty would feel and I can understand how it dries up bugs and worms. I bought it from Natural Pawz, a store that sells mostly natural pet products. The salesman told me he uses it on his pets and he couldn't have said more positive things about it. Just be sure to get the food grade DE. The brand name of the one I bought is Soil Mender - www.soilmender.com and phone 800-441-2498. It has a cat and dog on the label and directions for mixing w/food.
Mixing rate: To be mixed with animal feed at a rate not to excced 2% of the total dry weight of the rations.
The bag is actually 1.5 pounds for $12.99 and I've barely used any of it. My cats actually seem to enjoy me putting it on them. If you try it let me know what you think. I wish we lived closer I'd give you a little to try. Hey, maybe Soil Mender will send you a sample if you explain what's going on with Milo. Can't hurt to try.

Permalink Reply by Cindy Kerns on June 14, 2012 at 3:57pm Sarah, the most detailed info with directions for use in humans, cats, dogs, chickens, and about any other animal you can think of is on the More Than Alive website. I went back in there late last night (couldn't sleep) and all the way at the bottom of the article are comments from lots of people that are using it themselves and for their animals, and people that have questions. DE even kills bed bugs (all kinds of insects) and they talk about using it as a wormer. I think I read almost all of them. I was excited to find out it also strengthens bones and helps you sleep better; I have Osteoporosis. I started taking it yesterday. I put it in my tea yesterday and today I mixed it in some apple sauce. It's tasteless and they say to drink lots of water with it. I'll keep you posted on my results.
