I swore I would never tell this story again outside the family but you caught me at a weak moment.
First, let me say that Momma Beautiful was the best cat I have ever known and my relationship with her is filled with unusual circumstances that just amazed me. But one thing I learned early on was that she absolutely did not like to have her tummy rubbed. I always though I could eventually get her used to it for no other reason than two of her boys love it. I would never…

From time to time, I am reminded of the story of a momma cat named Scarlett. Usually, it's by something really appalling like that of a human mother who recently beat her 13 mo. old baby boy to death because he wouldn't stop crying.
Scarlett was a stray cat who lived in an abandoned garage in Brooklyn, New York in 1996. It is believed that she was less than a year old when she had her first litter of 5 kittens. If so, this would place her in the area of mid-teens when she…

Anyone who has had a cat or even watched one from a distance has probably noticed they like to play. To cats everything is a potential toy! But where does the desire to play come from? And why do cats play so hard when they do play?
The desire to play goes back to their early infancy when they develop the first hunting instincts. Though they have the instinct to hunt, they have no idea how because Momma hasn't taught them yet. But in preparation, they challenge themselves…

They are funny....and they're all different. Tigger has been a really good cat, and incredibly mellow and nonaggressive...considering all he's gone through. That doesn't necessarily apply to outdoor neighborhood cats who violate his space. He gets a bit worked up over that....but even then, not in a very aggressive way. He doesn't care much for dogs though. My sister has a Sheltie that is about the least threatening dog I've ever been around. Tigger hisses at her if she comes anywhere near him....even though she goes out of her way to avoid him and he isn't afraid of her. Go figure.
Well, after awhile we questioned whether Tigger was feral. It seemed more likely that he had been a pet at some point because he seemed to know about indoors and he very quickly overcame some of the basic trust issues and was quite confident with me. He showed up in an area where there was a lot of seasonal residents and sadly, it wasn't that unusual for pets to be lost or abandoned. He's never expressed much interest in going back outdoors. His one lingering behavior from back then is that he loves to eat and works hard at assuring he'll never miss another meal.
