The Tactile Cat (Pt. 2)
Once we understand the reasons why cats like being petted, the next step is to use it for bonding purposes. Not all cats will bond with us. Some will bond with one person in the household and not others. Nobody can predict who a cat will choose to bond with. But when they do, the result can be quite striking.
As predators, cats evaluate each contact they make, in degrees of danger. Even when encountering a mouse for the first time, a cat will approach it with caution. …

History & Superstition Surrounding the Black Cat
Halloween is rapidly approaching and decorations including black cats abound. But how did black cats become associated with such a scary time of year? The fact is, from the times of the ancient Egyptians, cats have been revered in many cultures of the world and even given god-like status in some. In the British Isles, China and Japan, the black cats has been seen as positive symbols of prosperity, fertility and luck while in Europe they were associated with evil. So why such a disparity? …

Black Cats, Witches and Lord Byron
Today, while attending a wonderful poetry event at the Gillis Branch librarian Fresno, I was momentarily distracted by the display one of the librarians had put up of a black cat with its back arched.
It’s nearly Halloween, and this is the time when the more mysterious side of our feline friends is celebrated. Inky felines abound, as stuffed animals, Halloween decorations, and in Halloween-themed cartoons and films.
Yet, while our image of the Chat Noir at Halloween is now…

The Body as Cat Sign Language
We cat lovers have countless tales of how our kitties use their tails, paws and claws to let us know things! Body language is one of most important aspects of feline to human communication. In fact, cats use their bodies to create a type of sign language, according to the Arizona Humane Society.
“Domestic cats have advanced far beyond their wild ancestors in the capacity to develop new forms of social organization and communication. They use their bodies and facial expressions to…

Cat Intellegence
Cats are much more intelligent that many owners realize, let alone understand. Keeping in mind that cats can't stack boxes to get to a banana (which is a measure of how well we humans understand abstract concepts), they can solve rudimentary problems. That's right! Cats are problem solvers.
Example #1: When I want to let the cats go out in the back yard, I open the sliding glass patio door about 1 foot. They can come and go at will. One day I was having trouble with…

Cats and water...
Ok, so i posted a blog a few weeks back about how my cats are fed milk all the time because my parents think they only like milk, and they wont drink water,
Ive bought the cats bottled water, to drink especially, ive been placing it down for them..
And it seems everytime i go back to the kitchen, its been swapped for milk again.
I keep saying to my parents, leave the water there to give it a chance, or keep refreshing it so its new and fresh for them to drink, but they…

Milo's Story
The morning of June 17, 2011 my husband and I were up early getting ready for work. Now, my husband usually leaves home around 5:00 a.m. however, that morning he stayed around the house and piddled around on a few things outside. While he was outside, I was inside getting ready. When my hubby then decided to head on into work he came in and we said our goodbyes. Now, I always watch my hubby drive down the driveway since we live on a hill. Well, he drove down the hill and pulled out of the…

The Tactile Cat
Anyone who has owned a cat knows that they, for the most part, enjoy human contact. Some enjoy it so much they will do whatever they think is necessary to attract your attention so they can get it. When I was a young boy, our cat "Friskey" used to jump on the card table and lay down in the middle of our card games. It was a bit more troublesome when she walked through the chess game between my mom and I sending the pieces flying or rolling off the table. So why do cats like the attention…

Cat Communicators: How the Cat's Meow is Just That to Us Humans!
In my last blog, I wrote about how cats are much more giving and altruistic beings than we could ever imagine. This time, I want to talk about how our cats communicate with us.
To the casual observer, a cat’s meow is just that: The vocalization of a small, furry mammal. But not all meows, mews, and mows are created alike. Researchers are finding that cat communication is much more sophisticated than previously thought.
In fact, cats are masters of using the meow to get exactly…
