Milo was neutered back in September 2011. He will be 9 months old January 30th. He is however I think trying to (and excuse me for saying it this way), hump either my leg or arm.
He's not aggressive about it he starts out as play but acts a little odd with little nibble bites and grabbing on. I always put a stop to it and set him on the floor and say no firmly ... then try to distract him with a toy. I don't ever remember my older cat doing this after being neutered. However, that was over 20 years ago.
Is this normal and will he grow out of it? Any suggestions on what I can do will be greatly appreciated. I have read that cats do this because they want attention. Last night Milo tried again so I laid him down on the bed and started brushing. That seemed to calm him down and put him to sleep for a little while. I'm trying really hard to give him the attention he needs ... just not sure if it's enough.
I am away from home 8-9 hours a day at work and when I am home I'm constantly running around fixing supper, cleaning up the kitchen, etc. I have been trying my best (as I always have) as soon as I get home loving on Milo and petting and playing. When I'm not doing anything else throughout the house Milo and I are playing. Even as early as 2:00 in the morning when I REALLY don't want to be awake! ...
I can really use some advice as to what to do.

Comment by Sarah Lewis on January 27, 2012 at 11:29am Julie, I have tried the same kind of thing. I will place him on the floor and say no firmly. Though sometimes I don't stand up. I will try that and see what happens. He did try to bite my arm and hold it down last night when we laid down for bed. Only thing that helped was my husband saying no.
Comment by Julie Christine on January 26, 2012 at 5:00pm my boy was fixed at 7 months old and never tried to hump me but did(for about a few weeks) try to bite down and hold my arm down with his claws. i think he was trying to establish dominance. so what i did was tell him NO sternly and put him down on the floor and stood up tall with my arms in the air to remind him that i was a lot bigger than he is. then give him a toy to distract his attention from me. took a week of doing this silly thing but it worked LOL
Comment by Sarah Lewis on January 26, 2012 at 9:06am I have tons and tons of toys and 4 scratching areas and a cat tree. He stays pretty occupied. The only thing I can think of as to why is maybe because I am away from home so long that when I am home he constantly wants to play. ... I don't know ??? The vet said that he is trying to dominate over me and be boss (I guess that's what you would call being alpha cat, even though he's the only cat I have). Yesterday he never even tried. I couldn't find a squirt gun so I bought a whistle. That has helped as far as keeping him from scratching at the TV when something "fun" bounces on the screen! lol :) ...
Comment by Heidi Helene Christensen on January 25, 2012 at 9:37pm You COULD teach him to walk on a leash and walk him twice a day. Also leave toys out for him to play with and posts for him to climb in but do NOT let him out unsupervised it is too dangerous.
Comment by Heidi Helene Christensen on January 25, 2012 at 9:35pm My cat was neutered at 8 months but at 8 years he mounts my leg when he sits on me or his bed or whatever. HE gets all dreamy and starts kneading and then humping. I just ignore it or pick him up and put him elsewhere to distract him.
Comment by Debbie Smith on January 25, 2012 at 3:04pm Hi Sarah. You may be able to get a squirt gun from toy stores. Or you may be able to get a squirty bottle, like what hairdressers use to dampen hair. Another shock tactic would be to fill a plastic bottle with small pebbles, and shake it when Milo is being embarrassing.
Comment by Sarah Lewis on January 25, 2012 at 12:17pm Well, I called the vet today and he recommended that I purchase a squirt gun or a whistle. He said that Milo was trying to dominate over me. If the squirt gun doesn't work than a whistle may work since it's a sound that irritate him. ... Can't hurt trying I guess. Only trick is ... where will I find a squirt gun in the middle of winter!?!?
Comment by Sarah Lewis on January 25, 2012 at 10:56am Milo is constantly playing. However, with not being home 8-9 hours a day I'm not sure what he's doing throughout the day. I think he does play as I have come home and found toys in different spots than from where I left them. When I am home he runs all through the house and we play with him with his toys. I just don't know. Last night we had chili for supper and he just didn't want to wait before I was finished so he could "play". ... Think I will call the vet today.
Comment by Sandra on January 24, 2012 at 11:05pm Maybe he needs more exercise/play time? He is young, after all. Does he go outside at all?
You might want to call your vet and ask him/her also.
Comment by Debbie Smith on January 24, 2012 at 2:55pm Hi Sarah
Sorry to hear your embarrassing problem. My sister has this problem with her neutered male. I wonder if spraying him with water may stop it. That is the advice over here to teach kitten not to do something. Hope someone has some other suggestions.
